No, it’s not to distract others from climbing on the bleachers in the closed position. A 4-inch sphere can actually help you be code compliant with your bleachers. According to the International Code Council, “open guards shall be constructed of materials such that a 4-inch-diameter sphere cannot pass through any opening.” What this really means? If there are gaps in the bleachers, there’s a chance accidents will happen. There are a lot of small hands and feet sitting in your bleachers and you want to make sure they stay with the person they belong to. Take a sphere such as a stress ball or an oversized tennis ball, and try to pass it through any gaps in your telescoping bleachers. Check the walking surface and the walls – does it fit through? Check the end rails and the gaps between the seatboards and footboards. It’s not just the guards you have to worry about though, there is much more to the Code than what is stated above, if your sphere passes through any opening, you may need some work to ensure you’re compliant. But you won’t have to use the stress ball for its intended use, you can give us a call or enter a request on our Service Portal and we can provide you with an evaluation and possible solutions through our Maintenance Solutions Program.
As always, if you have any safety concerns, you can contact us and we would be happy to help you.
