Westlake City Schools welcomed elementary students to their new Westlake Elementary School in August 2019 and held a Formal Dedication for the community in September 2019. The new building combines students from four of the aging elementary schools into a new environment that fully supports 21st-century learning. Educating students from Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade, the district has an expected enrollment is 1,200. With 154,000 square feet to cover, the building is divided into “houses” for differing grade levels focusing on the differing needs at each grade level.
Stevens Industries educational casework is featured throughout the building, including varied colors of finishes for each house. Each house, or wing, in the building has a commons area featuring serpentine shelving along with standing bookshelves.
While the building is impressive in size, it is designed in a way “… to maintain the small school feel of their neighborhood schools. The layout captures the small school feel, while providing all of the amenities of a 21st century school environment. This includes flexible spaces that can be configured for larger school-wide events.” – Westlake City Schools
