For new telescoping bleachers, it is required by the International Code Council that you have aisle rails (handrails) with a lower bar, installed at all aisles with the rail height above tread nosing greater than 34” and less than 38”. Also, it is required that the rail can withstand a 200lb concentrated load.
For existing bleachers, it’s highly recommended to make this upgrade for the safety and convenience of your patrons and spectators. It’s important to note though, that by simply adding aisle rails to your telescoping seating doesn’t automatically meet current safety and code requirements. On existing bleachers, you’ll want to be sure that the aisle ways can support your aisle rails – which means, you have to have a minimum of 23” on each side of the aisle rail to be code compliant. This is most always an easy fix though, especially if you have Hussey Seating Company Courtside seats that can be taken out to expand your aisle way.
You will also want to be sure that your aisle rails are installed properly and can withstand the 200lb concentrated load. The last thing you would want is for someone to lean on your railing and fall forward as it detaches from your bleachers due to faulty installation. Bleachers are installed with the notion they can withstand a cheering crowd – so with the most dedicated fans, your system will be safe if you ensure your upgrades are installed correctly.
Of course, if you have questions about your seating system, you can contact us and our Bleacher Service Team will walk you through it!
